The network is designed to be robust. Essential network components are designed and built with redundancy in order to reduce the possibility that a single fault can result in failures of the network. The transmission lines between major network components such as base stations and switches are also redundant. In addition, backup power solutions have been implemented for essential network components securing network availability in the most difficult situations.

TETRA standard

Nødnett is built over the TETRA standard. A TETRA network offer secure, encrypted radio communications in talk groups and in direct one-to-one communications. It is also possible to transfer data at moderate speeds.

As TETRA is a standard, it is more likely that equipment such as radios and accessories can be procured from many vendors. TETRA technology is in use in many countries throughout the world, both in public security and in businesses with high demands for reliable communication.

Base stations

Coverage for the Nødnett network is made possible through the use of terrestrial base stations, much like a cellular or mobile network. Nødnett transmits and receives signals between the base stations and the radio terminals used by emergency service workers. Conditions such as topography, distance between radio base stations and coverage from neighboring base stations are considered in order to find the most effective placement for Nødnett base stations and to provide the best coverage possible.

The Norwegian Emergency Network Nødnett will have about 2,000 base stations across Norway.

Core network and transmission networks

The core network is the "intelligence" within the network. The core network consists of several central computers (called switches). The core network and the base stations are connected through a transmission network, i.e. high capacity data lines. Transmission network consists of either fixed data lines, such as fiber lines or radio links. Radio links are often used for data transfer between two base stations and is based on line-of-sight.
